We hope it stays that way. It's an excellent example of how technology can empower people who are blind or vision impaired to be more independent.

    I always wondered: what happens when you make a mistake? Do you have to take out the paper & start all over?

    • @jhagen2669
      @jhagen2669 Рік тому

      Depends. If it's a little mistake, and you can just add one more dot to fix it, then you backspace and braille the correct letter. (like if you intended to braille the letter k- dots 1 and 3, but you accidentally only did dot 1, then you can backspace and add in the missing dot.) There is a braille eraser, where you can smoosh out the incorrect dots. (a pen cap works pretty well too). That should only be used if you can do it very smoothly. If not, another option is to backspace and mark full cells over the errors and then start the word all over again-- kind of like using a pen to cross out a written error.

    I learned Braille when I was 19 and the first-ever Braille device I used was a braille writer at my blind School. Then I learned the slate and stylus at the Iowa Department for the blind. I've also taken Hadley courses in Braille and I use my Braille writer do my Braille homework for my Hadley courses. I have known Braille for 8 years now and I plan to be a braille teacher and the Braille transcriber. I'm also learning Braille because I'm visually impaired from glaucoma and my other eye conditions and I want to be prepared in case glaucoma limits my sight. I want to be literate always.

      Same as me. I lost an eye during the start of the pandemic. I bought an OrbitReader20 and started learning 6 months after my first surgery failed; and my fixed eye began to leak. Maybe I won't ever be bleeding in both eyes; but I am getting ready. If it only happens after my daughter graduates college; I will be fine. My biggest problem is learning to navigate big computer documents, and I barely know contracted braille. I 3D printed an 8-dot stylus; but I can't avoid 6-dot forms. So I bought a Perkins, and some slates. I have been writing braille-related code. Maybe I will be able to help out on Linux. You would think braille in terminals on Linux would be quite easy; but it isn't. I might have to switch to Windows to get better screen readers; but I am very much a backend Linux developer.

    Wow. Lucky I came across this video. I’m hoping to add one of these to my typewriter collection very soon, and I think this will help me once I actually learn to read and write in braille.

    I find these videos almost useless! As a semi-sighted person, trying to show a blind person HOW to do this, it's impossible! NOWHERE have I located a drawing of what each button does, or even a list! Nearly $500 and every use of this gadget is a battle! Customer Service is no better. In the above video, the demonstrator just moves his fingers left to right, never demonstrating the correct buttons to push! What help is that? IF at least he TOLD us what the buttons did… So frustrating.

    in 3rd grade we had a blind girl in class and I always liked when she was in the room for quiet writing time because the sounds of the braille writer were (and still are) very satisfying to hear. Unfortunately, the rest of the class didn't think that way so Annalee usually went somewhere else with her guide teacher for quiet writing time. I remember when she would really get into a flow you constantly heard that end of the line bell lol

    I’m learning how to use this in order to help a visually impaired person. What I have not observed through the first three videos is the means by which the Victor Reader Stream communicates with the user. All this key punching and the presumption - only a presumption - that a voice of some sort will be responding to the key pushing.
